I dog sat, as a previous post detailed, at a troubled and messy home. However, like in a shitty motel in which your few bar cell service is better than the in house wifi, all that is left is the TV. They don’t have every channel but 100s of the 1000s. I don’t understand how a TV show makes money these days. A genuine CW, regular broadcast, over cable, show. Who the hell is watching that? Old people? Children who should be in school?
Anyway the person’s home I was watching did not in fact have bad cable. It did have every possible streaming service. Disney and Apple, Netflix and Hulu, HBO and Peacock, and all down the line. Assuming the recent crack down on shared accounts for these services I cannot even imagine the cost. Even if at best, each service is $10/month, I was looking at at-least $80 in monthly recurring bill. You cannot possibly watch that many shows.
I make decent money. Or rather did. And that $80 and few hours missing from my month would leave a gapping hole I don’t see how anyone can fill.
Now I’m sure, you watch one show here but it doesn’t have another show, yatta yatta so you end up with a few streaming services. And I guess a few more after that. And I get it, being hip and up to date on the latest shit must help you bond with your co-workers or something.
To be fair. I watch probably equivalent amount of hours of YouTube. I even pay for the service to be ad free. $5/Month on a shared plan for ad free YouTube. I have infinite and varied content to peruse and watch. Daily uploads from a variety of subscribed accounts. And half the time I find nothing interesting and do something else, or put on music.
And for that. I am guilty.
But I am damn well better than even having a single TV/movie streaming service. It could be I’m out of it. Not cool. Wasting my time now staring at a screen or something. Could be I’m insensitive, y’know, in the off chance your entire self worth is derived from the fact you enjoyed the latest season of the whatever Star Wars spin-off bullshit just aired.
It isn’t that I don’t respect the medium of film making, or a banger TV show, or whatever. I do. Many of the people I care about work in that industry and a good movie can make your whole week. Leave a genuine impression and make you think.
I’m just saying go to the damn theater. Go to a friend’s house who has the ONE streaming service you need to catch up. Make a thing of it. But to think you, at home, alone, need more than TWO (being forgiving) STREAMING. SERVICES. You’re out of your whack man.
I get it. You and your girlfriend need to watch Love Island so you and your girlfriend’s friends can talk about it, and its all over tik tok and social media and stuff. Wait a minute, no I don’t get it. You’re spending how much to watch a show you’ll forget about in six months?
And while I’m being an apparent masochist, I might as well be a sports ball cringe guy too. ESPN, YouTube TV, NBC, UFC, I don’t even know. I really don’t even know. But I know to watch baseball, or football, or hockey, or whatever you need to align your personality to in order for your father to look you in the eye as man to man, costs you over $100. Perhaps I will forgive the family that goes in together on it and uses the team of your favored colors as an excuse to get together. That I do understand, and appreciate the community of it. After all I think that’s what it all comes down to.
I don’t get why YOU then need to have a series of sports channel services you don’t even watch all the games of, couldn’t watch all the games of, for 100s of dollars. That’s ridiculous. They charge more every year because they still can’t believe how much and how many people will pay.
Say John at corporate, 2025 numbers are in. Should we try $250 this year for a half package with black out games?
Sure Anthony. And if the suckers go for that, lets try $350 next season.
I’m stunned. Stunned. I over heard a conversation where a few people were strategizing how to get the most games for their team. It came down to needing two different streaming services and intermittently purchasing a pay per view. YOU AREN’T EVEN GOING TO WATCH ALL THE GAMES.
Luckily they have turned it into gambling and fantasy sports. That justifies it. Of course. Somehow. Of course.
And for my $5/month I also get highlights, commentary, entire games, speculative fantasy support, etc of everything that might be watched. If I so chose. But god the ball tossing and destruction of young adult minds to CTE is boring.
