La Luz: or 10.5 miles and 3975 feet

Sunday: I decide to take a shot up La Luz the next Saturday, first try this year was in February and the snow turned me around fairly early.

Tuesday: I ask if anyone else is interested but Saturday is already busy with plans, decide to keep through with it regardless.

Friday 6pm: Ian and I watch Godfather, my first time seeing it, and after I pack up water and snacks, find my gear, I make it to bed around 11. The plan is up at 6, leave at 630, start the trail at 7.

Saturday 5am: I wake up, I know myself well enough that I won’t get back to sleep so I start moving. I eat 2 yoghurt cups and a large serving of blueberries for breakfast and then pack some snacks. I grab: 1 cliff thins bar, 2 kirkland chewy bars, 2 clif bloks(one with caffeine), and 3 handfuls of peanuts. I estimate this is around 13-1500 calories.

6:58am: I get started on the trail, I shoot for a roughly 4-hour hike, and plan for it to be about 9.5-10 miles long.

Mile 1: I start the trail running to get a little head start, just until it gets too steep to keep speed.

Mile 2: It gets steep, I realize I forgot to take any allergy meds and hope that its not too bad.

Mile 3: I connect with main La Luz and pass a large group of kids on summer camp hike, that would probably be a pretty fun job.

Mile 6: I figured this is roughly the halfway point, effort wise.

Mile 7: A big section of rock scrambles leave my right ankle sore and a little twisted energy levels are dropping hard, but no direct sun yet is a big win.

Mile 8: I take my first rest, progress is slowing to a crawl, Im very tired and getting slower to react and landing steps harder. At rest I eat the clif blok with caffeine and drink some water. In a short minute im feeling great, should have been better about slow feeding carbs to keep me up, but this is feeling good now.

Mile 9: I decide against the additional mile spur to the crest and keep headed towards the tram top.

Mile 10: I thought I would be done already.

Mile 10.5 I am done.

I’m done just a little early and sit to watch a few hang gliders take off from the mountain top, at 11 Ten3 opens and I head in to have a drink and buy a tram ticket down when I can. I have a banana soda (La Cumbre Hefeweizen) and a Aperol Spritz, never tried one of those before but I can say for a fact I will be having one again. Very good 8.5+/10.

It was a good day, good hike, tired and minorly sore but no possible injury issues. Hope to see some more of the boys out with me next hike.
