I Don’t Think We’re Smart

I’m a pretty smart guy. I’ve always felt so at least. But as I learn more and mature I am beginning to see how dumb I really am. But just keep that in the back of your mind as you read the following. I’m a dumb ass, no wiser than any.

My point here is: that the more I’ve come to understand about our life and world, the more I realize we (the humans) know absolutely nothing.

Sure we can program robots and fly to the moon, and cure diseases, and paint, and build houses that hover around a comfortable 70 degrees (I don’t even know how to spell fahrenheit ((wait I got it right)), and grow crops, and make the internet go, and electricity, and ibuprofen. Especially ibuprofen. But we know so little about everything, even the things we know a lot about.

I think about homeless people a lot. It’s one of the few social/political things I don’t really have an idea on how to approach. On one hand, I don’t like them. There I said it. I don’t like em. They make me uncomfortable, I don’t want to see them, I want to avoid them. I dislike the roadside beggar. When I see the form wrapped in tarps sleeping on the side of the street I feel more disgust than pity. At least in that moment. They are often dirty, and surrounded by trash. Not to mention the usual stigma of mental illness, thievery, and drug abuse. All of which to me, give a pretense of violence and “not in my backyardedness”. However, in the safety of my own rented abode, I do feel for them.

Me and an old roommate talked about it at length. We concluded that we too are about two weeks away from homelessness ourselves. A car crash that kills some of the family I could fall back on, and the firing of me from my job could leave me destitute. I think a lot of people don’t consider how close they really are to being the highway tent person.

That being said, I would not choose to be homeless. Some people do. This is where my unknowingness comes into play. Should it be illegal to not have a place to sleep? Of course not. But should public spaces be littered with tents and bums? I don’t think so either. Should you have to pay taxes to enjoy the park? Nope. Should you be forced into institutional housing? For sure not. I cannot place a line on this issue. I don’t know where the rational middle ground is. Now if some “educated” social worker person cut in here and blabbed on about government housing, and addiction centers and whatever else. I’m sure those things would help, but I don’t even know whether being homeless is a problem outside of our society.

Let me explain. I have drawn my line on other issues. For example now: gun control. I vote for none. Open carry of fully auto rocket launches I say. I think it has always been a human right to be able to defend oneself with the greatest advantage possible. Whether spear or arrow or AR-15. I do believe in that whole bit about the people against the government thing too. I’m not here to argue why, I’m just here to say I know at least where I stand on things.

This is getting super off topic.

I don’t even know where to begin to articulate my point. Here’s something I’ve been saying to myself lately.

“We don’t even know what food to eat”

We put store drinkable liquids in plastic. We eat bread. And cookies and McDonalds and drink sugar. And we eat tomatoes and fish. And we aren’t even sure which of those we can eat healthily and in what quantity. We are getting the basic idea these days, but its still up in the air about keto vs veganism. What I’m getting at is that we’ve been an intelligent species for how many hundreds of years and we don’t even know what Food to eat. Given our great scientists and wisdom and data and whatever bullshit we can’t even get our diet more or less figured out.

To think we’ve been to the moon (probably) but I still get migraines. This is the utmost frustration of our times.

Medications have side effects. Some homes have asbestos. Trump was president. Biden is president. Alcohol is legal. Nuclear weapons haven’t been disarmed. We eat pesticides. This is all ridiculous. We know nothing.

There I think that makes my point. Now here’s where it gets radical:

I don’t care about the studies.

The food pyramid. Using your phone before bed. Drinking tap water. Sometimes a new breaking study, from the university of who cares, finds something so obvious to be true that what was the point of even researching it. They finally nail down that once and for all that chocolate makes people happy. “Well if we measured the dopamine level in people before and after eating a peanut butter cup and noticed a 3% spike on average per person per capita while correcting for cultural bias and demographic.” And some chad psychologist guy turned podcast stud will tell people to eat a gram per day and take an ice bath.

Take weed. Weed bad? no. Weed everyday? yeah okay maybe bad. Weed smoking? Obviously inhaling anything other than air is bad. Hell, having a gas stove apparently takes 10 years off your lifespan. But does it cause lung cancer? “No bro its not tobacco lmao where’s your study”

I’m tired of needing proof from some institution to justify how I think. I don’t need a study to tell you that being over weight is bad for your health. I don’t need a citation when I say that I think organic food is probably better for you than bug sprayed super corn.

I do not like this turn to scientific pronouncement for everything in society.

Science is great. Go science. But I think “the science” is becoming an evil. Science after all is just a method. I don’t care what the current consensus is. They’ve been wrong before. They will be wrong again. We are wrong about so much already. We barely know anything. It is important to be rational and educated YES. The studies are important and need to be conducted. But the faith aspect, and blind trust disturbs me.

Look I’m not special for this. This isn’t news to anyone. I am, as I said, a moron. All I’m trying to say is,

The next time I see a Dr. Huberman clip, I’m gonna to get mad. The next time someone says “Ya’know studies actually show that X leads to Y” I think it should be appropriate to answer “I don’t care, we hardly know how the brain works at all”

This shit coming out unproof-read and unedited at 12:19 am. For context and as both apology or excuse.
